Show highlights
The exhibitors of Photonics 2023 included leading manufacturers of laser and optical products, dealers of major companies, research institutes, and leading educational institutions of Russia.
It should be noted that the number of exhibitors from China exceeded the pre-pandemic level, with 25 companies demonstrating their products this year.
The Zelenograd Development Corporation, the Skolkovo Foundation, and the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences presented their group stands.
Bauman Moscow State Technical University, St. Petersburg State Marine Technical University, St. Petersburg State University of Aerospace Instrumentation, and St. Petersburg Electrotechnical University “LETI” presented cutting-edge developments in laser and optical technology.
St. Petersburg State Marine Technical University showed its developments, including the research carried out within the world-class research centre Advanced Digital Technologies and implementation of the Priority 2030 academic leadership programme.
The Institute of Laser and Welding Technologies of St. Petersburg State Marine Technical University presented the ILIST-M direct laser growing facility developed under the Priority 2030 programme to equip university laboratories and regional technology centres of the national network.
Bauman Moscow State Technical University presented nine developments at its stand. Among them were an automatic multispectral detection and tracking system, an optical module for displaying graphic information, photonic integrated circuits, and the Optical Power Meter hardware-software complex.
In addition to presenting new products, university lecturers talked about promising materials and technologies, assisted in selecting equipment and components, and provided guidance on all questions of possible cooperation.
The stand of the Zelenograd Development Corporation hosted an agreement signing ceremony between two leaders of the Russian photonics industry – Quartz Crystals Technology AO and Lassard OOO. The agreement provides for the supply of quartz glass tooling for the production of equipment based on laser systems, among other things.
Conference programme
As usual, a conference programme is a very important part of Photonics.
The Laser Association and EXPOCENTRE AO prepared and hold 31 events jointly with the Photonics Technology Platform.
The key event was the 11th Congress of the Photonics Technology Platform, which brought together 17 conferences on photonics related topics.
The conference programme was opened by a joint meeting of the Council of Head Technologists, the Council of the Laser Association, and the Secretariat of the Photonics Technology Platform on human resources for the photonics industry. The event was organised by Shvabe AO, the Laser Association and EXPOCENTRE AO. The discussed issues included labour shortages in the optical sector and improvement of the training system in the various regions.
Other participants of the joint meeting included Russian Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Vasily Shpak, Deputy Director of the Department for Certification of Research and Teaching Staff of the Russian Ministry of Science and Higher Education Mikhail Petrov, representatives of the Rostec State Corporation, Shvabe and other enterprises.
Vasily Shpak, Russian Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade
“The 20th century was the century of the electron, and the 21st century will be the century of the photon, so the issue of staffing in this segment of the radioelectronics industry is particularly relevant. Industry representatives need to consolidate to draft a roadmap for improving educational programmes, infrastructure and the development of human resources in the field of advanced technologies. All the necessary resources for this are available.”
The Investment Session on Key Photonics Technology Projects was organised by the Photonics NTI Centre of Competences at Perm State National Research University and EXPOCENTRE AO.
Company directors and heads of design institutes spoke about the development of scientific, technical and technological solutions for fibre optic elements, the development of technology and technological equipment for the manufacture of active components of photonic integrated circuits, the direction of research and work of research laboratories, and much more.
The Laser Association and EXPOCENTRE AO organised the Panel on Opportunities for Chinese-Russian Cooperation in Photonics. The participants discussed opportunities and prospects for the Chinese-Russian scientific and technical cooperation in 2023, state support for joint projects, experience gained from organising cooperation between member organisations of the China Optical Valley Laser Association and the CIS Laser Association, and possible joint infrastructure projects in the field of photonics including congresses and trade shows.
Photonics 2023 hosted a plenary session of the 11th Congress of the Photonics Technology Platform. One of the presentations was named the Nobel Prize in Physics 2022. Quantum Physics: from Puzzle to Technology.
